Wireless Speakers that work should be easy....Right?!?

Wireless Speakers is an interesting phrase. It says wireless speaker right, so it should just work with what I have and be completely wireless right?? Yes and no, some of it depends on what your goal is, because as with most electronics, there are different "types" of wireless speakers. These types all affect how well your system will work, and the features it will offer you. Let's dive in to this with more detail below.
I've had lots of clients ask me if they could use their existing Bluetooth speakers outside and connect them to their phone. Note I said speakers and not speaker, so they want to play to more than one speaker with Bluetooth. This is an important clarification that will be addressed later on. First we have to start with how these speakers work. Wireless speakers generally work two ways. Bluetooth and Wifi. (as you read on you will generally find for more features and reliability WiFi is the way to go).
Most people have a portable Bluetooth speaker, you connect your phone or portable device to it and boom your playing audio from that device to the speaker. Simple right. Yes when you only want to do just that. The complexity comes when people want to add more features, more speakers, or make them rear speakers in a theater system. This is where we find limitations and differences in how Bluetooth works versus WiFi.
Did you know Bluetooth has versions, and these versions are directly related to the features and performance the Bluetooth speaker will offer? The first bluetooth version started in 1999 and was version 1.0. That makes sense to start with version 1. Take a look below at the time frame of how bluetooth evolved and the amount of versions they have.
Bluetooth 1.0 - 1.2 (1999) Bluetooth 2.0-2.1 (2005) Bluetooth 3.0 (2009) Bluetooth 4.0-4.2 (2010) Bluetooth 5.0-5.3 (2016-Feb. 2024)
The point of these versions is to show that as newer versions of bluetooth evolved more features and reliability came onboard. So this client that was looking to play to multiple bluetooth speakers that he already owned....can he do that? Yes and no. Yes....if he has bluetooth speakers and devices that are version 5.0 or higher. Bluetooth 5.0 introduced dual audio. So when a client says "I would like a 'wireless speaker'", these are some of the things I think of from a professional standpoint. What is the client after, what are their goals? Do you want multiple speakers? Do you just want a surround with wireless speakers? These answers and solutions will help determine the best wireless speaker option, a happy returning client, and no callbacks (which means no problems).
If a person just wants one speaker or perhaps a pair, the standard bluetooth speaker could be an option. However, if they want to use these as surround speakers, or to add more speakers to expand the system, a standard bluetooth speaker is not the best option. The electronics industry is constantly evolving, after all. Additionally, you will observe that both Directv Stream and Fubo TV offer various TV plans. I have indicated in the chart which plans are required to access the listed channels.

From a cost comparision (as of September 2023) Fubo TV offers all the channels listed with a DVR for the best price. In our area Bally Sports network is a big one, people want the Guardians, and Cavs. With that said we will see what happens to Bally sports in regards to their problems. Will this change in 2024 - 2025....probably so stay tuned. But for 2023 it was time for a cord cutting update with the current information based on questions I commonly get.
If you happen to have no interest in sports and are only looking for the essential channels, there are a few other options available. However, it is important to note that these alternatives do not currently provide local Cleveland channels. Sling TV and Philo are among the choices you can consider. Please refer to the comparison chart below for more details. While the cost is significantly lower, keep in mind that you will not have access to certain sports programs and local Cleveland channels.

Are local ATSC 3.0 TV channels now being encrypted??

Things continue to evolve regarding over the air antenna signal and ATSC 3.0 or Nextgen TV. Before we go to much further if your confused and wondering what is nextgen TV?, then read our blog describing this new off-air antenna format in detail here . Then come back to this article for the update.
DRM or Digital Rights Management is an encryption that is starting to pop up on some cities ATSC 3.0 signal. Broadcasters claim this is to protect their content from copyright issues like piracy, but it currently can't be decoded by the only two ATSC 3.0 tuners that are on the market (as of May 2023).
A few other notes before we dive in deeper. This only applies to cities operating in ATSC 3.0 and in the early stages of development. For those watching ATSC 1.0, this does not apply. As of this writing the only two ATSC 3.0 external tuners are currently out are the Zapperbox and HD homerun . Most new TV's have ATSC 3.0 tuners and would be able to process this encryption, but older TV's do not have these tuners, and would need an external tuner to view ATSC 3.0.
It is also worth noting currently no payment or subscription is involved with DRM encryption. This is being done to protect their content from piracy, or basically people collecting this signal then rebroadcasting it over an IPTV service. For example Locast TV was a local TV service that broadcast multiple local TV channels throughout the country, but they were shut down, stating this was illegal to broadcast beyond the networks local region. This brings up a few other questions:
1) Why is this encryption already enabled when the current tuners can't decode it? 2) Will an internet connection be required to receive a DRM ATSC 3.0 signal? 3) Will there be any DVR restrictions with DRM? 4) With DRM encryption would TV stations charge to access their stations?

Keep in mind that ATSC 3.o (NextgenTV) is in its very beginning stages. As with most electronics, especially new formats and systems, things change and evolve. Let's hope this evolves for the simplicity of the consumer, and does not cause more loopholes and headaches. That's the update for now...I'm sure there will be more to come.

Cutting the Cord? - NextGen TV & ATSC 3.0 Antenna Signal

Are improvements on the way for antenna picture quality & reception?

Watching TV with your antenna (aka cord cutting) is a popular thing and the signal is free. Goodbye to monthly cable/satellite and streaming fees. Keep in mind I am not referring to streaming TV services using apps, but instead TV of the old days where you used an antenna to get your TV from nearby cities. This would provide you with the local TV stations that your nearby big cities provide. Well the old days are becoming popular again. More TV channels continue to be added and who doesn't love that it's free.
But for people living on or past the outskirts of big cities, digital antenna reception has been...sketchy at best. I am referring to those who live at least 30 miles and up to 60 or more miles from big cities. Back in the analog days of antenna reception before around 2009 and digital transmission, people 40 - 60 miles sometimes had better reception than they do now. Yes it was a bit snowy, however they could still at least see something. With digital, HD and 4K antenna signal you either see it or you don't depending on the signal strength.
If you were to look at north central Ohio and the Norwalk and Sandusky areas, we are right in the middle of Toledo and Cleveland. There is a distance of about 50 - 60 miles to the TV stations towers depending on your location. Because of this distance the digital reception can be weak and will pause, pixalize, have the audio cut out, or have no picture. See the picture below for this problem. Perhaps this is an issue with your antenna system. This digital signal uses a standard of ATSC 1.0, and to say the least it can sometimes be sketchy at longer distances.
TV stations are currently working on a transition into the ATSC 3.0 standard also called NextGen TV. This is a different type of transmission which offers 4K picture quality and could allow for better long distance transmission.

Antenna/Video Pixelation

In order to dive into this new NextGen TV also known as ATSC 3.0 we need to learn a little bit about our current digital signal and ATSC 1.o. Our current digital signal (as of March 2021) is ATSC 1.0. Before we had ATSC 1.0 digital signal we used analog signal, providing a clear to snowy picture depending on weather, trees, multipath interference, etc.... (I will get into trees and multipath interference later). This analog signal was NTSC, or National Television System Committee. Think of analog and digital transmission like AM and FM radio. These are different frequencies which require a different tuner to receive them. In the 90s and after technology expanded and we had the capability of sending more channels and doing this digitally.
Thus the ATSC was born, which is Advanced Television System Committee. Between 2005 and 2009 TV stations were changing over to digital transmission and using the ATSC 1.0 signal format. During 2009 most TV stations would stop sending out analog transmission, meaning no more clear to snowy picture. People were starting to buy High Definition TVs and this new digital transmission (ATSC 1.0) could support HD signal up to 1080i. We can now get better signal quality with an antenna and get our main network stations for free. Because TV stations were now sending out a digital signal and not analog, consumers either needed to get digital converter boxes for their existing TVs to work, or replace their TV with a new HDTV.
So we have this new digital transmission using ATSC 1.0 everything is great right?? Not exactly. Yes it was good for people close to big cities say 20 miles or closer. But what about people on the fringes....you know those people 45 - 60 miles away? These locations were good and bad. Channel selection did increase, and picture quality was better. However due to the specifications of ATSC 1.0 and how the signal was transmitted, the signal is fragile to say the least.
On some days certain channels may pixelize or are not there, but other days they work great. This primarily because the digital signal of ATSC 1.o uses 8VSB modulation to transmit channels. This stands for 8 level vestigial sideband modulation. Long story short, this was probably not the best type of transmission to use mainly for those out away from big cities. If you look at this information from wikipedia, it talks about this 8VSB signal and the new ATSC 3.o signal which will be OFDM or orthogonal frequency division modulation. Okay enough of the technical jargon, but that is relevant to our signal issues. These types of signals are mentioned because the ATSC 3.0 claims to have better transmission for longer distances, and performs better with multipath interference.
Okay what is multipath interference? With antenna signal multipath interference is when an antenna picks up the main signal from a broadcast tower, but then picks up an out of sync secondary signal. Think of this as the same signal hitting your antenna at different times, thus causing interference and problems. Common things that can cause this are anything being in the way of your signal.
Examples would be signal bouncing off a nearby building, cars, trees (mainly leaves), wind, airplanes etc.. So two advantages of ATSC 3.0 or nextgen TV are: 1) It should perform better with multipath interference. 2) Because of the different type of transmission (OFDM) it may have better signal at longer distances. This could be great news for those of us living 40 - 60 miles from big cities....aka north central Ohio. We may be able to significantly improve our antenna reception with this new type of transmission.
You can find what cities TV stations currently transmit in ATSC 3.0 and when other cities are expected to add this on the nextgenTV website . If we look at Ohio, as of December 2021, Columbus & Cincinnati transmit some channels in ATSC 3.0. Cleveland shows us it is coming soon. This is most likely due to many factors such as agreements, equipment, cost, and so on. What are all the advantages of ATSC 3.0? Let's take a look:

Going over these advantages we can see ATSC 3.0 will offer 4K TV, 4K HDR, Dolby Atmos, farther TV reception, and an interesting one would be custom advertising for demographics. Currently TV stations send out the same commercial to their whole audience. With this new transmission they will now be able to offer custom and different advertisements based on shows and those who watch it. There may also be on demand and interactive content. This would be web based and require an internet connection for these features. Take a look at this video below describing more about these items.

You may be wondering if you will need a new TV, will my existing antenna work, and lots of other questions. Some people may ask do I have to do this? No, it will not be required that you upgrade to ATSC 3.0 when your local TV station starts offering ATSC 3.0. You can continue using your existing ATSC 1.0 digital signal. TV stations are voluntarily switching to ATSC 3.0 and are required to still offer ATSC 1.0 signal for at least 5 years after they switch. This is also mentioned on the Q&A below. The Sonos Arc

Sonos ups the ante with their Arc Soundbar

Well we wanted it to finally happen, it took forever to happen..., but it happened. What is that? Sonos replaced their playbar with a new and updated soundbar. No knock on the playbar, it did a great job and had a great lifespan, but it was time for something new. Sonos introduced an outstanding new soundbar with Dolby atmos around June of 2020. Wait what...what is Dolby atmos? Basically a new type of surround sound data which introduces sound from above us instead of just the sides. Dolby atmos can be generally heard one of two ways.

1) A custom home theater system with speakers around you (in the walls), and now adding speakers in the ceiling. This is great for flyovers, or scenes with action directly above you. 2) A soundbar or any speaker with upward firing speakers.

These upward speakers distribute sound toward your ceiling allowing it to reflect downward back toward you simulating sound from above. These speakers and soundbars are generally approved by Dolby laboratories. A manufacturer could not design and bring out a soundbar saying it has Dolby atmos if it does not meet the specifications and requirements of Dolby laboratories. If your looking for their general page showing all devices with Dolby atmos you can see that here. Going back to these upward firing speakers, you can see these in the picture below. The soundbar offers a total of 11 speakers, two firing upwards. It also features 11 class D amplifiers matched to each speaker and the architecture of the soundbar. Basically it has one amplifier for each speaker, and that amplifier and speaker is tuned to the design of the soundbar. Sonos did their job in the design and sound quality of this unit.

When it comes to soundbars, if your looking for one of the best, you would want to check out the Sonos Arc. Sonos can be generally used for one of two reasons. If you wanted a great home theater (without going totally custom and having a 7, 9, or more speaker system), or for wireless home audio. This would allow you to play music from your portable devices wirelessly to the Sonos devices. You can see more about that at our a blog from us here .

So let's get into the Dolby Atmos aspect a little bit. Dolby Atmos is just a sound data which travels along a existing type of surround sound. Here are a few notes about this.

1) It needs to use either ARC or eARC, requiring an HDMI cable. What is ARC or eARC, I thought that was the soundbar name? ARC stands for audio return channel, eARC stands for Enhanced audio return channel, and yes it does stink that Sonos named their soundbar the same name as the type of audio return channel Dolby atmos uses. So when we refer to arc, we can either be referring to the Sonos Dolby atmos soundbar, or the HDMI port on your TV that has ARC or eARC, in parentheses next to it. You can see the picture below of an HDMI IN port on most TV's that have ARC and eARC.

2) So what is happening with HDMI ARC is a two way communication. Before HDMI ARC inputs on TVs, the signal only traveled in one direction. Makes sense right, your cable box, bluray, streaming device, game system has an HDMI output and the TV has an HDMI input. Out of your source device and into the display device (TV). With HDMI ARC & eARC, you still use an HDMI connection (with an HDMI cable), however the signal can now travel bi-directional. So if your connecting your soundbar or receiver (with HDMI ARC or eARC), to your TV these units can talk back and forth with each other.

Audio is sent from the TV to the soundbar even though the TV HDMI port says HDMI IN. The TV input that says HDMI eARC or ARC has the ability to also be an audio output. This is why when connecting a soundbar or receiver with ARC you only want to use the TV HDMI port that has eARC or ARC. The remaining HDMI ports on the TV will not be able to send audio back to your soundbar or receiver, and can only act as inputs.

To further provide an example, lets say you had your streaming device (Roku, firestick etc...) and Sonos arc soundbar. Now let's look at the picture on the right above. We see three HDMI inputs labeled HDMI 2, 3, & 4. HDMI 3 is the eARC/ARC input. This is the only input you can use to connect your Sonos arc to, as HDMI 2, & 4 can't supply audio out to the Sonos arc soundbar. You then connect your streaming device to either HDMI 2 or 4 and your all ready to go.

3) The Sonos Arc soundbar does has the option of being connected with an HDMI to optical adapter. If your TV doesn't have and HDMI input with ARC or eARC, then you can use this option, however you would lose Dolby atmos with this. Toslink or optical does not support Dolby Atmos surround sound.

4) So I just hook it up and am getting Dolby atmos right? Not exactly. I would first refer you to these videos below I have made regarding this. These both take in account using an HDMI cable with ARC or eARC to connnect your Sonos Arc to your TV. Here I made two videos explaining more how to verify if you are receiving Dolby atmos on your Sonos arc. I could try to go on explaining it in great detail, but I think the videos do a better job.

Dolby atmos uses Dolby TrueHD, or Dolby Digital Plus to travel along. Remember how we said earlier Dolby atmos is just data that travels with an existing type of surround? The surround modes that support Dolby atmos are Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Digital Plus, (this could change). This means that if your TV does not support or allow for these surround sound modes, or if your streaming device does not, it is possible you would not have Dolby atmos on your soundbar or receiver.

5) So does all this above only apply to the Sonos arc soundbar? No, theoretically this would apply to all Dolby atmos soundbars and receivers. I get it, it can seem more involved, complicated and crazy than you would think or want. But this is the world of electronics. One other big thing I want to mention. I can almost guarantee that someone will have connected their soundbar perfectly just like described above, and they have checked their audio settings and set it in Dolby Digital Plus, however they are not getting Dolby atmos on their Sonos arc or receiver.

Is this surprising? Not really. We could talk about this in a whole new blog...which we may do. This comes down to how nice the software of your TV plays along with the software of your soundbar or receiver. Basically hello software bugs, or the software being incompatible even though the engineers planned it to be compatible. In my opinion electronics today all works around the software it was programmed with. We can think of these TVs as a computer first, with a big display.

Yes in theory this software from all manufacturers should work great together, and never have any problems.....yeah right. So unfortunately these products don't always play nice together, and this is something we all have to deal with even as installers and techs. Sometimes everything works great, but I assure you software bugs are out there and can be a problem.

6) One way to help prevent this is to only purchase electronics from respectable manufacturers. In my opinion my first choice of TV to match up with a Sonos arc or other electronics items would be Sony, followed by Samsung, and then LG. Yes I am aware of everyone with Samsung and LG sets, we do sell Samsung. This is not a knock saying you have a poor choice of a TV. And no I am not saying you will never have a problem with Sony and your soundbar or receiver.

However I have to look at it also from an installer, and technicians perspective. What is going to have a great picture, be very reliable, and have the BEST software with the least amount of bugs or possible problems. Because problems, mean more time on the job site, call backs, and possibly disgruntled clients.

Samsung QLED TVs and LG OLED sets are very nice, so no I am not ripping on everyone with those TVs. These are just some of the things we may want to think about before we go and purchase our TV and soundbar. I hope this helped explain some things about Dolby atmos, what arc is (both on a TV and the Sonos arc), and how it works. Now if only all electronic brands could play nice together........

I Want Cheaper TV Streaming Channels!! It's Expensive - Revisited

New cord cutting services are emerging, some are going away!

Well we are a few years into the cord cutting and we don't miss cable any. A few years back we cut the cord and chose Playstation Vue as our provider. The service has been very good for us, and did a great job at giving us what we were after. There are now many choices for cord cutting services, but what we are starting to see is some of these services go bye bye. One of these for example is P.S. (Playstation) Vue. So if you have PS Vue, or are looking for cord cutting options, consider this an update as of January 2020.

In looking over the latest companies today we can see some things have changed. For example there was Playstation Vue , they are now gone. Directvnow has changed to DIRECTV Stream . Others are Sling , Hulu Live TV , YouTube TV , Fubo TV, Philo TV , Apple TV+ , & Spectrum to name a few. You can click on these companies to view their services and channel lineups.

One important note - 2023 update: For those that like their sports, some common sports channels in our area people watch are Bally sports, Big 10, and ESPN. The only two apps that support Bally sports are Directv Stream, and Fubo TV. So if you are looking for the sports channels of Bally sports, Big 10, and ESPN these would be the two apps to consider.

In looking over these companies currently, the three most popular companies if sports is your thing is Directv Stream, YouTube TV, and Hulu TV. We could also add Fubo TV since they are only one of two apps that provide Bally Sports. Yes their prices are getting pricey, but these top three to four apps do have the most channels. Sling still remains a good option for basic channels at a low price. A good contender to battle sling now is Philo TV, they offer a great amount of normal TV channels, but no sports channels.

However with no sports channels, they are at $20 a month, which probably will change in the future. For those looking at what give the best mixture of regular channels and sports, you will have to compare Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, Fubo TV and maybe others. For us currently it is between Hulu TV and YouTube TV, Hulu offers a bit better channel selection, but only 50 Hours DVR (you can add on enhanced DVR). YouTube TV offers not quite as good TV selection but unlimited DVR. But keep in mind this assessment is based on my channel choices, so this can be different for everyone.

If you are looking at getting into or changing streaming services, the best suggestion would be to click on the links above and take a look at the features, channels, and pricing from these companies. Each company offers something a little bit different whether it is channels, DVR, pricing etc... I'm sure in a few years down the road things will be different again, after all this is electronics. 1) Do these companies offer a DVR so I can record my shows?
Yes, most do, and DVR storage can range from 14 to 28 days after your show originally airs, depending on your provider. I suggest checking with the company you choose to make sure.

2) Can I keep Spectrum and not need all my Cable boxes?
That may be possible. Click HERE for Spectrum , If you used them with their app, you would need a SmartTV or Smart Device to view the app on. You would also need to make sure your Smart TV or Smart Device supported the Spectrum app. Currently Samsung TV's and Roku Supports the Spectrum TV app. You would also want to contact the company and ask how the pricing would change if you only were using their app to watch TV instead of using their cable boxes. You would still need to be subscribed to TV service with these companies if you did this.

3) Do I need a separate box for this service?
Yes and no. This depends on what type of TV you have and how new it is. If you have a newer Smart TV with lots of choices for internet apps, you may be able to load the app directly through your TV.

4) If I need a separate box for the app, what are these boxes?
These boxes would be the latest 4K Roku boxes or sticks, the Amazon 4K Fire stick, a Google Chrome stick, or 4K Apple TV. To determine which box you'll need, you will want to check with the company you choose and verify which box will work if you need one. Some boxes do not support all these companies.

5) If I need a separate box or stick for the app, do I have to rent these boxes/sticks or can I buy them?
You do not rent these boxes, you purchase them. While prices for these boxes vary, they range anywhere from $30 - $100.

6) Do I still have a TV guide with this service?
Yes in most cases you should have a TV guide with your service. You can always double check with the provider you may choose.

7) Is there a search feature to find TV shows?
Yes in most cases. While I can't speak for each provider, check with the provider you are thinking about choosing to verify this.

8) Can I watch live TV with this service?
Yes, most, if not all the stations with the exception of "On Demand" channels, are live.

9) Can I get local channels with this service?
Most likely yes. Most providers will either supply local channels for your area, or have an option for this. These channels would be local ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox. Again check with the provider you may go with to make sure. If you want more local channels, you can get an outdoor/indoor antenna (depending on your location), or find another internet app for local TV stations.

10) I have a bundled package with my current TV provider, what do I need to do with my current package?
You would need to cancel the television service, and possibly keep internet service from your provider. In some cases, I suggest searching for different internet providers in your area and comparing prices and speeds, especially if you are not in a contract. If you had unlimited DATA with your cell phone provider, you could eliminate your TV provider all together, (as long as you don't care about landline phones) and use your cell phone as a hotspot when you are home.

This would create a WiFi network in your house, but you would only have WiFi when you are home and the network would only be as strong as your phone. We recommend testing this in all the areas of your house for coverage, speed, and strength before you choose this as your final option. Also keep in mind with this, that some cell phone companies bottle your speed after you use so much DATA, but still supply "Unlimited DATA". This is something you have to take into consideration also. The more TV you watch the more this could possibly be a factor.

11) What internet speeds are needed for this service?
Regarding internet speeds I will refer to download speeds: If you are streaming 1080P HD content generally 50 - 100 MBS download will work. We recommend at least 100 - 200 MBS for 4K streaming since most people usually have many WiFi Devices. Speaking of Internet if your internet is slow or cuts out we have solutions for that. Check out this blog if you have slow internet showing the differences between the latest wifi versions and then contact us. Keep in mind, the more devices, such as smart phones, tablets and computers, you have on your network and are using at the time you are watching TV will slow your speed down.

12) How do I know or test my internet speed?
Go to Speedtest.net or Download the Speedtest app on your smart device and run a test to check what speed you have. This a great way to check your speed and also make sure you are getting what your internet provider claims you are getting.

13) Can I use this service on more than one TV at the same time?
Yes, most of these providers offer streaming on multiple devices, usually starting with two devices.

Hopefully this helps give you some idea of where to start figuring out a new way to watch TV, contract free, and for a much more affordable price. My suggestion, whichever service you choose, is to try it for a month or two with your existing cable service to make sure you will like it. You can always cancel the internet TV service at anytime. Custom Home AV Installation - Don't put that drywall up

If your building a new house, or remodeling your existing house, you may want to wait on the drywall and think about what lies behind the walls to support the electronics you will have in your house. Your home internet, and your audio and video are changing quickly. From streaming TV through your internet, to the latest in whole home audio through your phone app, and even your wireless internet network. All of these play an important role in what consumers want in today's technological world. We want our TV, Wireless Internet, and Whole Home Audio System to work plain and simple. Lets go through some important items that you would need or perhaps want to make this happen effectively. Networking cable is a big one to start with.

Internet is at the heart of any newer home today. Modems, routers, and mesh systems can do a great job, but nothing can take away from electronics items hardwired into the internet. This is especially true for TV's. We know your going to want to stream shows, apps, movies etc... This requires internet and bandwidth. The more items that are hardwired allows for more support on your WiFi system. Think of all the wireless devices you will want to eventually hookup. The amount of wireless devices can add up quickly. Prewiring your network cable to locations such as TV's, office, and places where you want a hard internet line saves a lot of headaches down the road after your house is all done, and the cost to do it then is much more.

While talking about prewiring network cables to TV's we need to discuss a second reason to prewire network cables to areas of your house. This reason is to have solid wireless internet throughout your entire house and even outside in patio areas. This can also be referred as whole home internet. If you only have a modem in one location, and you have a fairly big house, places far away from the modem will lose signal and with poor signal comes slower speeds. Easy fix right? Why not just put in a network extender, you know those that just plug into the wall?

Well if it is a true network extender and not part of a mesh system or an access point, then extenders can slow your internet speeds by up to 50% of what you started with. Also when doing anything with WiFi, you can generally see a 5% - 20% loss in speeds just from transmitting wirelessly. For these reasons having access points in areas of your new house which are hardwired to your internet is a smart choice. This also includes hard wiring your TV's and offices.

To give you a further example of having your internet hardwired with access points, we recently worked with a client who built a pool house and wanted outdoor audio and internet. Okay, we proposed a Sonos system with outdoor speakers. What about internet? During our consultation we performed a wireless diagnostic on their signal levels through their house and in the outdoor areas they wanted for internet. We realized that the wireless internet fell off sharply just as they walked to the edge of their patio and toward the pool house.

Long story short, we recommended during the building phase, installing a network cable to the pool house, and having us install an access point outside. This access point would be hardwired to the internet for no loss of signal. At the same time we recommended replacing their router in the house with a system that works with our new access point in the pool house.

This eliminates the need for anything wireless, it eliminates the network extender (which can lower speeds up to 50%), and makes another satisfied client. Finally by having a network cable out in the pool house the Sonos system could also be hardwired into the internet. From a design and engineering standpoint this was the best choice, and one that would provide the client their best choice. Custom whole home audio is another big one that clients like to have integrated into their walls. Think of a wireless speaker system controlled from an app on your mobile device, with custom in ceiling or wall speakers. A Sonos or Wiim custom integrated in wall speaker system is a perfect fit for this. (Speaking of whole home audio, take a look at our whole home audio page here ). Naturally the best time to take this into account is when you start building the house, or start the remodel, not after the drywall is done and your almost ready to move in. Lets take a look at the picture above. We worked with our client in this system on prewiring all the network cables to TV locations, along with network cables to an access point in their house. As stated above by having an access point hardwired to the internet, this provides the fastest wireless speeds to our clients devices through their entire house.

This system also had a custom Sonos audio system through their house, thus the white speaker lines. Had our clients approached us after the fact and drywall was up, it would not have been such a fun discussion. Sure it can be done, perhaps differently, but not in the best way. The Sonos system for this client featured two rooms with Sonos home theaters, and two outdoor speakers for their patio. Each Sonos home theater consisted of a playbar, a Sonos sub, and two in ceiling rear speakers. The prewiring consisted of running speaker lines to the in wall rear speakers. The outdoor speakers also had speaker lines ran to them, and back to our central location. You can view our video of this job here .

Finally two other items that are very smart to take care of before you drywall are smart home devices, and outdoor TV's (indoor also, but for this we will focus on outdoor). All these devices should be discussed as the start of your project, so the A/V techs, electricians, builders are on the same page, and you get what you want. Some of these smart home devices work far better when hardwired to the internet. Which is a important reason to take care of this before you drywall.

Outdoor TV's possibly need A/V cables ran to them, coax, electric. So don't wait until the end to think about these things. Any system design and installation is always easier when the walls are still open. Here is a video where we installed an outdoor TV, in a clients patio area that was all finished. We worked with our electrician, and were able to meet all the expectations of our client. But we all know it would have been easier if the house was being built or remodeled. With that being said we understand there are times where you would like these things, but the house has been done for many years, or there is no remodel plan. That is totally understandable and a different scenario. I am referring to when your building your house or remodeling, those are the times these items must be addressed.

What has happened to today's electronics???

I was browsing YouTube recently, and I came across a video that I found myself agreeing with. This video does a pretty good job in explaining where our electronics industry is today, before I even get into any detail, it would be best for you to take a look HERE .

Now that you have watched the video, you may have a entirely new understanding about your electronics, and the current state this industry is in. As an installer, technician, and salesperson, I recognized this video shows exactly what I have seen over the last five to ten years. I hope this video and article help shed some light on why your equipment (regardless if it's an appliance or TV) has had a problem so soon after being purchased. My goal is to help shed some light on this for consumers. Our shop receives frequent phone calls from consumers asking about a problem with their TVs, and why they have failed when they were as new as only 1, or 2 or 3 years old. The simple truth is most television brands today are not made as well as TVs manufactured 10, 20 or 30 years ago. From reading reviews, and other sources it appears this is pretty much true for appliances as well.

After watching the video (which you can click or tap if you missed it), we find that the reliability of appliances has not improved as technology has improved. In the world of TVs, manufacturers have been able to produce televisions with more advanced technology and offer them at lower costs, by design. Think about that: most likely when you bought your TV a few years ago, you paid more for it, and it probably didn't have the features a new TV has. Yet most new sets today cost less and offer more advanced features. That doesn't seem to make sense, right? You would think that improved technology would cause companies at least to keep the price steady, but instead they have added better technology, but lowered the quality of the electronics. And when I say quality I mean the life of the TV. It seems some manufacturers have built their TVs with a "throw it away" mindset, and the trade off is a lower cost for consumers. That console TV your parents had may still be playing, and more than likely lasted longer than most brands of new TVs today.

As a technician and installer for over 20 years, I have seen more problems from the brands with the lower price points. If you're looking for a TV that has a better chance of lasting longer than most of these current brands, our choices would be Samsung & Sony. We sell both of these brands and in the higher price points have found good results. In Samsung these would be the QLED models, We receive fewer calls from customers regarding problems with these televisions than we do about any other brands. Of course, I can't totally guarantee these brands will last more than a few years, but we have seen these to be more reliable than others.

Keep in mind that not every lower priced TV will fail after a few years, and that I am writing this with the goal of educating consumers on the current state of the electronics industry. But generally speaking, you get what you pay for: The less expensive brands and cost often offer a great deal, but at the cost of reliability.
